The Art of Envy, a most useful Sin!
Everyone wants everything handed to them on a silver platter. There is nothing wrong with wanting something to happen easily. What you need to realize is that this rarely ever happens. All things in life take work and effort, and the things worth having usually require the most of both.
For most people, it is easier to wallow in your misery than to step up and make the changes necessary to improve your situation. It is easier to complain about where you are than to honestly look at how you got there and decide what needs to change. Change takes work and a plan. Neither of these are easy, and sometimes it can be more than a person can do themselves.
There is nothing wrong with seeking out advice or help from those you see as successful in life. In fact, recognizing something in another person that you wish you had yourself can be incredibly useful. This usually leads to Envy, which is a Sin, but a great Sin, as it can help push you forward while you desire to have a life like the person you are envious of.
Envy does not have to mean sitting around resenting someone for having something you don't. Use that Envy. Study what they did. Look at the decisions they made, the risks they took, the mistakes they learned from, and the work they put in to get where they are. Instead of asking yourself, “Why do they have that and I don't?” ask yourself, “What did they do that I am not doing?”
That one change in perspective can make Envy an incredibly powerful motivator.
I have never known a successful person who does not like talking about their success and how they got there! If you can get a successful person to discuss these things, they can give you a wealth of knowledge about what to do in your own situation. Listen to them. Ask questions. You do not have to follow every piece of advice you are given, but you can take that knowledge, apply it to your own life, and determine what works for you.
So instead of wallowing in your misery, push past your limitations and take the steps needed to reach your goals. No one has ever become successful by staying in their comfort zone. You need to push yourself! Being uncomfortable is often part of growing. If everything you are doing feels safe, familiar, and easy, there is a good chance you are stuck in an unhealthy pattern.
Everyone, at some point in their life, says to themselves, “I wish I was more [insert something here]...” Maybe you wish you were more successful, more confident, more disciplined, more creative, more outgoing, or simply further along in life than you are right now.
That thought does not have to be an admission of failure. It can be the beginning of understanding where your limits are and what you need to work on to push past them.
You cannot change something about yourself until you are willing to acknowledge it. Once you recognize where you want to be, you can start figuring out what stands between you and that goal. Some of those obstacles will be outside of your control, but many of them will not be. Those are the ones you focus on first.
Ultimately, you need to look in the mirror and tell yourself: “I’m not done yet!”
Not tomorrow. Not someday when everything magically falls into place. Start taking the steps you can take now. The path to success is often a long one, and you have no idea what is around the corner. There will be setbacks. There will be times when you question whether the effort is worth it. There will be moments when staying exactly where you are now seems easier than continuing to push forward.
No one who has achieved success let fear dictate their life. Fear will always find a reason for you to stay where you are. Your job is to find the reason to keep pushing forward.
Once you start walking this path, things will get easier as your goals come within reach. The things that once intimidated you will become familiar. The limitations you once believed were holding you back will begin to disappear, and eventually you may look back and realize that the person you once envied is no longer someone whose life you wish you had... when pushing forward, never settle for "the same", reach for "I have surpassed you"!
